Rangers and Celtic antennas will be twitching at prospect of European Super League
Rangers, Celtic and even Hearts’ antennas will be twitching from the resurrected European Super League bid, according to The Scotsman.
The report claims that the new efforts from the European Super League aim to pry teams away from the UEFA Champions League by giving them a slice of the pie.
The Scotsman shared that the three teams leading the charge are Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus whose idea has now been tailored to be more palatable.

“The number of clubs reported to be involved could reach as many as 80. That’s enough to form four divisions of 20 clubs, which is reportedly the format being proposed,” as quoted by The Scotsman. (9 February)
“Not only will Rangers and Celtic’s antennae be twitching, so, too, those of the likes of Hearts, Hibs and Aberdeen: ’80 teams? That could be us.’
“Juventus, Barcelona and Real Madrid – are driving this latest idea, which has been tailored to make it more palatable. “Participation should be based on annual sporting merit,” is the relevant line in the new 29-page document prepared by A22 Sports Management.
“It’s clear the new proposals are trying far harder to appeal to supporters. Financial sustainability rules, for example, will be implemented – a relevant detail given recent charges brought against Manchester City by the English Premier League. There have been talks with 50 European clubs and football stakeholders. It’s hard to imagine Rangers and Celtic not being involved in these discussions.
“Will the likes of Manchester United, themselves loaded with debt, want to be part of their bail-out plans? Maybe not. Rangers and Celtic? Perhaps.”

Interesting proposition.
With as many as 80 teams proposed to compete in the multi-divisional format with a guaranteed minimum of 14 matches every season, the European Super League could be the future of football.
Whether it would be of interest to Michael Beale and co remains to be seen but there is certainly an opportunity to change things up on the European scene.
And it seems like the Super League is something that will continue to reappear constantly, maybe it’s time to suck it up and get on board.
It’s a radical proposal and it’s something that Rangers may well be fully part of, with the Daily Record reporting on 9 February that Gers are indeed in the mix to be involved.
Nevertheless, the Daily Record also reported that the SFA were bemused by the latest attempts to reinvigorate the failed plan after the controversial first attempt was brutally shot down.
So whether or not Rangers would even be allowed to take part in the competition is still very much up in the air too, although, there seem to be more legs in this latest attempt.
