Peter Grant shares verdict on ‘disgraceful’ Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos

Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos hasn’t done enough to earn a new contract from the club, according to former Scotland footballer Peter Grant.

Speaking on Go Football Radio (8 February), Grant suggests that the Bears must axe him in the summer following his “disgraceful” behavior with the previous manager, Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

Morelos has less than a few months left on his present deal at the club, and he is yet to sign a new contract. The Colombian striker has impressed under Michael Beale who has brought the best out of him.

“I wouldn’t be giving him a new contract, not for the way he’s carried on when you’re going to play the last four months of the season,” said Grant.

“Sorry, that’s not enough when you’re playing at a club that’s supposed to be challenging and trying to win things. And the way he went on with the last manager, which was disgraceful.

“So all of a sudden you think two or three good games offers you that, and I said to you before, I said that’s my concern coming into the season, bangs a few goals in, you get sucked in again thinking, well, he’s changed, he’s turned the corner because he works really well with a manager.”

Big decision

Morelos struggled with form and fitness under Van Bronckhorst at the start of the season, and he became the second-choice striker at the club.

Antonio Colak has been very impressive in his first season at Ibrox and he was preferred over Morelos by the Dutchman.

Under Beale, Morelos has been playing regularly. Colak is currently out injured, while Kemar Roofe is also missing. In such a scenario, Beale is left with no other option but to pin hopes on Morelos to deliver.

His contract situation has been well documented, but Beale probably has got indications that both Morelos and Ryan Kent want to stay put beyond the summer, as he appears relaxed over the contract issues.

If that’s the case, then obviously the club should keep Morelos. He is a natural finisher and a great goalscorer. He has scored over 100 goals for the club already, and Rangers are a better side with him in the squad.

Of course, Morelos can still leave the club. He has been reportedly linked with Turkish clubs, but Rangers are unlikely to offload him now unless there’s a massive offer.

In other Rangers news, the Ibrox bank is set for a cash boost after a document emerged on Wednesday.
