Rangers: Steven Davis delivers career-defining verdict on injury setback

Rangers midfielder Steven Davis has opened up on his disastrous ACL injury claiming he has to be “realistic” over his potential Ibrox comeback.

Having undergone surgery in early January, Davis is still in the early stages of his recovery, however, he is out of contract with Rangers at the end of this season.

Davis confessed to BBC Sport that it’s been difficult watching games knowing that he may never get the chance to play again, something which is an unfortunate possibility right now.

“I’ve got to be realistic – it’s a big injury and takes a lot of time to come back from,” said Davis to BBC Sport. (9 February)

“At my age and the stage I’m at in my career I know it’s going to be difficult but I’ve always been a very fit person so that should stand me in good stead and give me the best possible chance [of playing again].

“I haven’t made any decisions about moving forward, I’ll just concentrate on ‘rehabbing’ to the best of my ability and stay focused. I don’t want this to be the defining moment that ends my career.

“It’s difficult [watching matches], knowing that you might not get an opportunity to do that again but I’m very driven to try and get myself back out there.”

Fingers crossed.

It would be a massive shame to see things end at Ibrox like this for Davis and every fan will have their fingers crossed that he can make some form of a comeback from this.

Michael Beale expressed confidence on 27 December that Davis will be able to continue his playing career, although, this latest update from Davis seems less convincing.

An injury of this magnitude at Davis’ age is never easy to combat and unfortunately, there is still going to be a long and hard road ahead for him in his recovery.

Nevertheless, despite being 37 years old, Davis plays like a maestro in his late twenties and this is maybe a glimmer of hope fans can hold onto.

Rangers will also be faced with the tough decision in the summer as to whether Davis should be given a new contract at Ibrox, their stance on this matter is currently unclear.

Although, with the January midfield additions of Todd Cantwell and Nicolas Raskin it is looking ever more likely that the Ibrox hierarchy will opt against doing so.

In other Rangers news, a Celtic-mad manager has grudgingly admitted that the Gers are alongside the Old Firm rivals as a top-eight club in Britain.
