Rangers need new goalkeeper to replace Jon McLaughlin as transfer verdict shared
Rangers need a goalkeeper in the summer as Jon McLaughlin doesn’t exude confidence, as suggested by Daily Record journalist Keith Jackson.
Writing for the Daily Record, Jackson says that McLaughlin looks like a bag of “nerves” every time he takes the gloves on, replacing Allan McGregor.
Andy Newport, another journalist for the Daily Record, has also echoed a similar sentiment adding that it was “panic stations” in the final few minutes at Ibrox during their Saturday’s (4 February) 2-1 win over Ross County which shows that Gers’ back four hardly trust the 35-year-old goalkeeper.
McGregor remains the first-choice goalkeeper for the Bears, but the 41-year-old keeper hasn’t looked flawless this term. Having said that, he is still the best of the lot and adds valuable experience to the side.
“Michael Beale believes in sharing the workload but the more he sees of McLaughlin the more he knows he’ll be needing a new No.1 next season. The big man looks like a bag of nerves every time he gets the gloves on,” wrote Jackson for The Daily Record.
“Allan McGregor hasn’t been flawless either this term but the Rangers’ defence look far more assured when he’s in sticks. It was panic stations during Saturday’s final stages at Ibrox and that highlights the lack of trust the back four have in McLaughlin,” wrote Newport in the same Monday Jury column.

New keeper
Rangers need to sign a new goalkeeper in the summer. Every top team in the world focuses on adding top-quality goalkeepers to their ranks, and the Bears should do the same.
Last summer, the Bears offered McGregor a one-year contract extension. However, he is approaching the fag end of his career, and this should be his final season at the club. He has been a real hero at Ibrox, and have given a lot to the club.
It’s time for Rangers to look ahead to the future. McLaughlin is the second-choice goalkeeper at the club but he is not good enough to play week in and week out in the Premiership. Definitely, he should not come into the picture to replace McGregor in the long run.
Could Robbie McCrorie be an option? The 24-year-old is a reliable goalkeeper who enjoyed fantastic loan spells at Livingston where he did really well. He could be an option to become the first-choice keeper, but another young talented goalkeeper is needed in the summer.
In other Rangers news, the club have been handed a potential transfer boost as a World Cup striker linked with an Ibrox switch is likely to be available in the summer.
