New York City manager addresses potential return of Rangers defender James Sands

New York City FC manager Nick Cushing has remained coy over the speculation surrounding Rangers defender James Sands.

The American has been linked with an early return to the MLS outfit as he is not been a regular under Michael Beale at Ibrox.

Rather than answering with a yes or no, Cushing chose to avoid the question he was asked without even mentioning Sands’ name.

He said, via Glasgow Live [4 February], “I don’t think it’s right to discuss individual players and especially players who aren’t in our squad. I think for us, there are many negotiations going on across all of our squad. Recruitment at the moment is a big focus of ours. But I do not want to comment on individual situations.”

Time to part ways?

It does seem like Sands is not one of Beale’s preferred options in defence or in midfield and the time to part ways may have arrived.

It’s fair to say that his loan move hasn’t worked out as many thought it would and he’s not really improved as a player since joining Rangers either.

Rather than keeping a player that the manager doesn’t want, Gers need to make a decision and send Sands back to the United States if that option is on the cards

Alternatively, if Beale thinks he’ll add good depth to the side and the player isn’t demanding game time, it could be best to keep him at the club until the end of the season.

Whatever the choice is, it needs to be made quickly and Beale should come out and say their plans rather than this situation just dragging on further.

We would still think it’s best to keep him on but if his wages are perhaps coming in the way of further contract extensions then it could be best to part ways.

In other Rangers news, the club have been handed a potential transfer boost as a World Cup striker linked with an Ibrox switch is likely to be available in the summer.
