Michael Stewart slams Hearts pair after Rangers ‘brilliant’ win at Tynecastle

Michael Stewart has slammed Hearts’ squad depth after Robbie Neilson’s team were comfortably beaten by Rangers at Tynecastle on Wednesday night.

Two goals from Alfredo Morelos and one from Malik Tillman saw the Gers produce their best performance under Michael Beale to date.

Stewart has suggested the hosts didn’t have the depth to replace Cameron Devlin in midfield with Jorge Grant and Orestis Kiomourtzoglou not being “good enough”.

“Grant and Kiomourtzoglou are on the periphery and not good enough so they’ve not got the balance there when Devlin dropped out of the team, but I wouldn’t say they got anything wrong tactically, I just thought Rangers were absolutely brilliant and got into those gaps quickly,” said Steward (BBC Sportscene, 14m 45s, 1 February).

No team in Scotland, including Celtic, would’ve been able to deal with Rangers on Wednesday evening. Beale’s side were absolutely phenomenal from start to finish, with a number of players putting in man-of-the-match displays. Alfredo Morelos continued his good recent form, Ryan Kent was mesmeric and Glen Kamara was sensational in midfield.

The Finland international has to build on his performance at Tynecastle and ensure he is part of the Gers’ midfield on a consistent basis. He made it look so easy and knew exactly when to join the attack and when to stay back and support John Lunstram at the base of the midfield.

Lundstram and Kamara both looked like players who were completely aware that Nicolas Raskin will provide serious competition in the centre of the park. However, the competition for places is exactly what is required and will also allow Beale to rotate his squad effectively in the second half of the season.
