Rangers make approach for Manchester City wonder Cole Palmer on transfer deadline day

Rangers have made an approach to take Manchester City wonder Cole Palmer on loan until the end of the season, according to The Sun.

The newspaper has reported on its website that Pep Guardiola has blocked the potential switch, with him having a role to play for the Premier League champions.

Rangers are said to have been KO’d after their approach, as they hoped the promise of regular first-team football would have persuaded them to green-light the move.

Writing in their live blog [31 January, 11:16] with news from Phil Thomas, The Sun shared the bad news with another failed attempt at poaching talent from the Etihad.

“Rangers are the latest club to get knocked back in a bid to take Manchester City rookie Cole Palmer on loan, according to Phil Thomas,” they wrote.

“The Ibrox giants hoped City would let the 20-year-old striker move to Scotland for the rest of the season, with the promise of regular first team football.

“But Pep Guardiola put the blocks on a move, as he insists Palmer – who has played nine Prem games from the bench this term – has a role to play at the Etihad.

“The Rangers KO follows previous failed inquiries by Brighton and Sheffield United to get him on a short-term deal.”

No chance.

This never looked to have gotten off the ground this week.

Rangers have tried and failed for James McAtee from the English giants before, so with Palmer having more first-team experience, it looked very unlikely before this.

Ross Wilson does have ties in the Premier League from his time at Southampton, and he has tried to pull some strings but to little success unfortunately.

Michael Beale would be happy with Nicolas Raskin joining Todd Cantwell as his two new signings this month, admitting that he already has a very specific number nine in mind for the summer.

Alfredo Morelos, Antonio Colak and Fashion Sakala should be enough for the final third between now and the end of the season, with the summer eyed for a real turnover it seems.

Palmer may not be turning up to Ibrox, but it is good to see the club really targeting these big-name deals and trying their luck to poach some of the best talents the Premier League has to offer.
