Tam McManus shares verdict on controversial Ryan Jack moment from Rangers win v St Johnstone
Tam McManus believes the decision not to send Ryan Jack off during Rangers 2-0 win over St Johnstone was correct, despite the controversy around it.
Jack was given a yellow card for a late tackle in the first half, with many people believing he could have seen red for it even after a VAR review saw no need.
And responding to the uproar on social media, pundit McManus took to his own personal Twitter account (29 January) to share his opinion, claiming that if that was a red card tackle then tackling should be banned as a whole.
“Nicky Clark is not a red card for St Johnstone [in my opinion],” he wrote.
“Ryan Jack is not a red card for Rangers [in my opinion].
“Two good, hard tackles to me. If we are giving or want to see red cards for both those tackles we are genuinely as well to just ban tackling altogether in football.”
Consistent
Far too often we see referees make a decision, and then VAR tell them to review it and they change their mind without even a second of thought.
On this occasion the referee has quite clearly seen the incident as he hands out a yellow card instantly, and then he gets to view it on the monitor several times and believes he’s made the right decision. There is no conspiracy.
Jack goes in hard and mistimes the tackle, definitely. But there is no malice in the tackle a a yellow card is right. He’s not overly high on the player and there is definitely not any excessive force.
Had the decision gone the other way it would be difficult to see how people wouldn’t be moaning that referees always just let the game get VAR’d without the referee making any calls themselves.
Willie Collum deserves praise for being brave enough to stick with his own decision, because it was the right one, and Michael Beale deserves praise for bringing Jack off knowing he was on a tight rope.
