Ryan Kent could leave Rangers in January transfer window as Leicester City circle

Leicester City are sizing up a move for Rangers winger Ryan Kent in the closing days of the transfer window, according to 90min.

Kent’s contract at Ibrox expires at the end of the season, and Michael Beale is looking to apply pressure on the Gers hierarchy to get him to put pen to paper before he becomes a free agent. [Daily Record, 23 January]

The creative attacker has been one of the Rangers’ standout performers this season, netting three goals as well as seven assists in 20 appearances and becoming a key cog in Beale’s works.

And 90min believes his impressive performances haven’t gone noticed with Premier League side Leicester City, who are in the market for a winger this month.

The report said: “Former Liverpool academy player Ryan Kent, who has been at Rangers since 2018, is also of interest to Leicester and remains a possible option in the final days before the transfer deadline.

“Kent is already known to Brendan Rodgers, who added him to the Liverpool first-team squad during pre-season in the summer of 2015, although it was Jurgen Klopp who eventually handed the player his only first-team appearance for the Reds.”

Losing Kent to Leicester this month would be a sucker punch to the momentum that Beale has built in his first couple of months at the helm.

Since taking over from Giovanni van Bronckhorst, the Englishman has overseen a run of eight wins in nine games, with Kent being a key player in the club’s return to form.

Although the Gers have failed to reduce the nine-point deficit to league leaders Celtic due to their impeccable league form, losing a player of Kent’s ability would all but spell the end of their chances this term.

With a ViaPlay cup final against the bitter rivals awaiting next month as well, Kent’s importance to Rangers has never been higher.

The one worry for the club’s hierarchy will be the lack of news on the winger’s contract status. With Kent not yet signing a new deal at Ibrox, the Foxes may fancy their chances of snapping up the highly-talented winger this window.

In other Rangers news, a club in Europe holds the option to re-sign a player from Ibrox whenever they like.
