Michael Obafemi exit from Swansea could have impact on Rangers move for Morgan Whittaker

Rangers have been pursuing a move for Swansea City youngster Morgan Whittaker – and the latest news from South Wales could have an impact on their move for the 22-year-old.

The Gers have had a bid rejected for the Swans forward, although the Guardian’s Fabrizio Romano has suggested (BetVictor, 25 January) they’re “expected” to return for the former Plymouth Argyle loanee, who registered 16 goals and assists in the first half of the season.

The Championship side have been holding out for their valuation of the attacker but after a transfer development on Thursday (26 January), their stance may well have changed.

TalkSPORT reporter Alex Crook has revealed (via Twitter, 26 January) Swansea attacker Michael Obafemi is set to join table-topping Burnley for a fee believed to be in the region of £4million. This news could go one of two ways for the Gers.

Firstly, Swansea losing one of their main attacking threat could see Russell Martin keep Whittaker and rebuff any deadline-busting attempt by the Scottish Premieship giants.

Alternatively, it could see the Swans become more lenient when it comes to their valuation of the attacker due to the club receiving a fairly significant fee by Championship standards.

Either way, this news is bound to have an impact on Rangers’ move for Whittaker and Michael Beale will be hoping for the latter of the two options. Nicolas Raskin seems to be edging closer to his move to the Light Blues and Todd Cantwell has already completed his move to Ibrox.

If Beale can land Whittaker and Raskin in the next five days it will mark an excellent first transfer window as the new boss.

In other Rangers news, the Gers are now fancying their chances of a major January transfer after Fabrizio Romano’s update with a move on the cards.
