Gary Keown slams Michael Beale for talking nonsense at Rangers
Gary Keown has slammed Rangers boss Michael Beale for his “scattergun” approach, suggesting it reflects a “touch of naivety” on his part.
Writing for the Scottish Mail on Sunday (22 January, page 107), Keown has been left unimpressed by some of Beale’s statements in recent weeks, which borders on nonsense.
The journalist says that one moment Beale finds Alan McGregor as the best keeper in Scotland, and he was dropped against Kilmarnock. Likewise, he was very effusive about Tom Davies, but he said there was never any interest.
“It’s just the scattergun nature of a lot of it that still raises eyebrows,” wrote Keown.
“One minute, Allan McGregor is the best goalkeeper in Scotland. Then, he’s dropped at Kilmarnock for a set-piece specialist who loses an awful goal from a set-piece.
“Asked about Tom Davies of Everton, Beale is effusive and refusing to deny anything. Before you can say: ‘Is Ross Wilson really still in a job?”, though, he’s saying there was never any interest.
“It might just be a touch of naivety, a soupcon of excitability.”
Does it really matter what he says in the press conference?
As long as the results are coming, the fans will not mind anything.
At the moment, there’s nothing to worry about. He can say gibberish all day long but fans will still be happy if he maintains the winning run.
Having said that he needs to be more astute while handling the press. If things go badly, the press will use it as a stick to beat him.
At the same time, he needs to learn how to deal with questions on transfers. There have been occasions where he probably there was a chance, and went on to say a lot about the opposition player.
These are early days in his managerial career and he will learn through experience.
So far, he has done a brilliant job. He has arrested the sharp decline that we faced under Giovanni van Bronckhorst and brought back the feel-good factor at Ibrox.
His next step will be to add quality players and make the squad even better.
In other Rangers news, the Gers are expected to sign this “World Cup star” in January.
