Fabrizio Romano transfer update disputed on Rangers bid for Swansea winger Morgan Whittaker

Rangers have not made a new £1.5million bid for Swansea’s Morgan Whittaker, according to a new update from the Scottish Sun.

Fabrizio Romano had reported earlier on Thursday (19 January) that the Light Blues had gone back to the Welsh club with a new offer, which had been rejected.

But that has now been disputed, and comes after conflicting messages from the two clubs’ managers over whether there had been previous bids or rejections, with Russell Martin suggesting there had been while Michael Beale said he was unaware of any.

The Scottish Sun update on Thursday afternoon says: “SunSport understands that Rangers have NOT made a fresh offer for Swansea’s Morgan Whittaker.

“It’s been claimed that the Light Blues have gone in with a £1.5million bid for the 22-year old, but those claims are understood to be wide of the mark.”

Confusion

It isn’t often that Romano’s reports on transfers get disputed so this is somewhat of a rarity, and if the Sun are right it is difficult to say if it is a positive for the club.

If Rangers are serious about getting the 22-year-old Whittaker through the door in this window then rejected bids clearly aren’t the way to do it.

There is surely no smoke without this much fire, with Romano also reporting on Tuesday (17 January) that an original offer had been made and the player wanted the move, so perhaps discussions are being carried out at a high level with verbal and official bids the matter of contention.

It appears there is some distance on the valuation for the Englishman who has just come back from a fruitful loan spell in League One with Plymouth.

The Gers board made clear when they hired Beale that they were prepared to back him in the January transfer window, so whether they are willing to spend at the level that Swansea apparently want remains to be seen.

A talented player with age on his side is always an attractive proposition, but he has so far thrived most in the English third tier so it would probably be a risk to shell out big money for him if the Championship side want to play hard ball.

In other Rangers news, Chris Sutton and Ally McCoist’s war of words of the Celtic conspiracy accusations reached a classic new level.
