Ally McCoist reacts to needless Alfredo Morelos incident in Rangers win v Kilmarnock

Ally McCoist has taken a dig at Alfredo Morelos after Rangers striker was involved in a first-half incident during the Light Blues’ 3-2 win over Kilmarnock.

The Colombian was involved in an altercation with Killie winger Daniel Armstrong halfway through the first period.

McCoist felt there was “no real need” for the striker to get involved with Colombian having improved his disciplinary record in recent months.

“It’s a free kick. He gives Armstrong a shove just before the goal. He gets himself involved when there is no real need to. He has calmed down over a period of time, but he’s still got that in him,” said McCoist (Sky Sports commentary, 20:24pm, 18 January).

Sucked in

Despite Morelos improving his discipline in recent months, it’s clear he still has a rash moment in him. Armstrong was trying his best to get under the skin of the 26-year-old. There have been far too many incidents in the past and it’s unlikely he will be given another chance by Michael Beale should another disciplinary issue arise.

With his contract coming to a close in the summer, it still remains unclear whether he will be a Rangers player come the start of the 2023/24 campaign. His performances since Beale’s arrival have been impressive and it will be intriguing to see if the new boss will push hard to keep him at Ibrox.

He was man of the match against Kilmarnock and put in a near-perfect number nine performance to steer the Gers to a relatively comfortable victory.

It’s up to Morelos to show slightly more consistency going forward, but the signs are certainly good for the 26-year-old under Beale.
