Jon McLaughlin time at Rangers up as journalist shares ‘truth’ amid ‘car crash’ at Ibrox

Gary Keown has suggested Jon McLaughlin’s time at Rangers is up with Michael Beale only rotating his goalkeeping options because there is “no outstanding candidate”.

The 35-year-old has been the Light Blues’ number two for the majority of the campaign but was given a chance to impress in the 2-0 win over Dundee United and the 1-0 win over Ross County.

However, the Scottish Daily Mail journalist has suggested McLaughlin’s time at Ibrox is up and that the current goalkeeping situation at the club is a “car crash”.

Rangers

“Beale can also pay Jon McLaughlin the respect of making it seem he is having a proper look at him with regard to the Number one position, even though we all know the truth,” said Keown (Scottish Mail on Sunday, 15 January, page 112).

“McLaughlin never really had a chance, to be fair, with McGregor allowed to hang over his shoulder and his time is definitely up.

“Beale only rotates because there is no outstanding candidate to play in goal. It is a car crash almost everyone saw coming – other than those at the top of the club – and it has to be sorted out before next term.”

New keeper

It’s fairly obvious that a new goalkeeper is almost certainly required at Ibrox for the 2023/24 campaign. McGregor is in his last season of professional football, and although he’s been an immense servant for the club, the time is right for the veteran to relinquish his number-one position.

The Daily Mail reported (30 December) the Gers are keen on Manchester City youngster James Trafford. The 20-year-old is currently on loan at League One side Bolton Wanderers and has been a standout performer for Ian Evatt’s side.

Rangers

Bringing a younger keeper to Ibrox would be a good option for Beale to consider. For too long there has been uncertainty in goal for Rangers, and bringing in a more youthful option would provide some much-needed longevity.

The summer transfer window promises to be the ideal time for Beale to really start his revolution at the club and construct a side which is befitting of the way he wants to play.

In other Rangers news, the Gers are expected to sign this “World Cup star” in January.
