Ally McCoist: Rangers must consider selling Alfredo Morelos in January transfer window

Ally McCoist admitted he would be “staggered” if Alfredo Morelos was still at Rangers at the start of next season and believes the club must consider any approaches for the striker this month.

Mexican giants Tigres have reportedly enquired about signing the 26-year-old striker this January, with Morelos’ contract due to expire in the summer. [El Porvenir]

After 164 appearances for the club, the Columbian striker has found the back of the net 72 times but has failed to live up to expectations this term, only scoring five goals in the Scottish Premiership.

Speaking in a clip from BT Sport’s Scottish Football Extra (Friday 13 January), pundit McCoist laid bare his opinions on the polarising centre-forward.

He said: “I would be staggered if big Alf was there at the beginning of next season, staggered.

“If they get an offer [next month], you would have to say they have to think about it. You’ve got to. 100% you’ve got to think about it.”

Summer exit likely

It would be a foolish move to let Morelos leave the club this January, considering the lack of alternatives currently at Michael Beale’s disposal.

With neither player fully trusted to play week in week out by Beale, the mantle has fallen to Morelos to start the bulk of the Gers’ games over throughout the New Year. Letting him leave this month could leave the Glasgow club severely understaffed if they don’t get the necessary replacements in.

There is no question, however, that a summer exit is far more probable, with the Columbian’s contract expiring at the end of the season.

Beale will already have his scouts out, searching for ‘El Bufalo’s’ replacement as the season draws to a close. Replacing the striker in the summer gives all parties more time to assess their relative options.

In other Rangers news, a key update on two Gers transfer pursuits in the January window has emerged.
