Sky Sports shares Rangers transfer news as Michael Beale eyes numerous options

Rangers manager Michael Beale is eyeing up “several options” this January transfer window despite the strong interest in Todd Cantwell, according to Sky Sports.

Beale is looking to add fresh faces to his squad in his first window since taking the reins at Ibrox, and the manager expressed the club’s interest in the Norwich City playmaker after the 2-0 win at Dundee United (Sunday 8 January).

Cantwell, 24, is free to speak to other teams due to his contract expiring at Carrow Road this June, and new manager David Wagner has made it clear the club are open to approaches. [Sky Sports]

The Sky Sports report states that the Gers have their eyes on other alternatives as well as the Canaries ace, in case another club wins the race to his signature.

The report said: “It is understood Rangers boss Michael Beale is weighing up several options as he bids to add to his squad and when asked about Cantwell, said: ‘He’s a player with a lot of ability and there will be a lot of interest in him.'”

Strength in depth

Cantwell looks like a great prospect if Rangers manage to complete the deal in the coming days.

At just 24, there is still plenty of room for improvement under Beale, and if he can rediscover some of his best form he showed for Norwich during their Premier League days, fans will be in for a treat.

His ability to pick the ball from deep and travel through tight spaces could be incredibly useful to Beale’s Rangers side and could help unlock opposition defences who decide to sit in a low block.

At a modest price, and with his best playing days still to come, a deal for Cantwell seems a no-brainer.

Despite the deal seemingly moving in the right direction, Ross Wilson and Beale need to have alternatives in case they are left high and dry. The club don’t want to get embroiled in a transfer saga, so looking elsewhere is a smart move.

In other Rangers news, the Gers are expected to sign this “World Cup star” in January.
