Chris Sutton will be in meltdown after Rangers transfer news on Todd Cantwell

Chris Sutton won’t be best pleased with the ever-growing transfer links between Rangers and Todd Cantwell this January after lavishing praise on him numerous times in years gone by.

The Gers have been heavily linked with a move for the Norwich attacker, as Michael Beale looks to strengthen his squad in his first transfer window in charge at Ibrox.

Cantwell, 24, burst onto the scene at Carrow Road as a flamboyant teenager and took the Premier League by storm in his first season, scoring six goals and producing two assists for Daniel Farke’s side.

Although Norwich finished rock bottom in the 2019/20 season, BBC pundit Sutton led a bunch of rave reviews on the midfielder, which could now come back to haunt him if Cantwell completes his move to Ibrox.

Speaking on BBC 5 Live Sport (June 27 2020), Sutton backed the midfielder to go all the way to the top of the game, saying: “He’s an exceptional talent – I think one day we’ll see him play top six.”

Alongside this, the former Celtic legend nicknamed Cantwell “the Dereham Deco” after a stunning performance against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City 3-2 in the Premier League (15 September 2019) – in which the Rangers-linked ace scored a brilliant goal.

Despite the Norwich academy graduate failing to reproduce these heroics in recent seasons, the talent is obvious for all to see. If Beale can persuade him to move north of the border, this is the perfect opportunity for Cantwell to reignite his stalling career.

Sutton, meanwhile, may come to regret his gushing reviews of Cantwell in the coming months and years and seeing the 24-year-old donning the Gers strip will add to his anguish.

For a modest price, and considering the huge ceiling he possesses, a move for Cantwell seems a win-win situation for all parties – barring Sutton.
