Barry Ferguson shares transfer verdict on Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos
Barry Ferguson expects Alfredo Morelos to leave Rangers – but he should play against Aberdeen in the Scottish League Cup on Sunday (15 January).
The former Gers hero said on Go Radio (11 January) that Morelos is a “certain starter” after Antonio Colak picked up another injury.
Kemar Roofe could be another option for Michael Beale but he has been out for months, and Ferguson wants the club to take time with him.
“He needs to get fitter for me but I think Morelos in the Rangers team, they do look a far better team,” said the pundit on Go Radio.
“He occupies centre backs, he moves them about and it frees up space for guys like Tillman and Kent. Regarding the game on Sunday, it’s a must-win for Rangers.
“I can see him moving on but I think Morelos has to play. I know Colak picked up another injury, Roofe has been out for a number of months so you need to take your time with him. He (Morelos) is a certain starter on Sunday.”
Uncertain
Morelos has only a few months left on his current deal at Ibrox and it is not clear what the future holds for him.
We are in the middle of the January transfer window, and the club by now should have made their decision about him.
Sky Sports pundit Kris Boyd, for instance, suggested that Morelos should be sold and he is not the right fit in Beale’s system.
Ferguson, however, feels that the Colombian striker adds more to the game, and the Gers look like a much better team with him.
His fitness remains a major issue at the moment. Unlike previous transfer windows, there hasn’t been enough interest in the Colombian and we are not sure whether the club has at all received any offers for him this month.
At the same time, the Bears are yet to strike a deal with him over a new contract, which has made the situation a bit messy at the moment.
The Bears are heading into this game on the back of a 2-0 win over Dundee United on 8 January. Morelos has managed only two goals since November, and hopefully, he can add more to his tally against Aberdeen.
