Graham Dorrans backs Michael Beale to get the best out of Todd Cantwell at Rangers

Graham Dorrans believes Todd Cantwell will succeed at Rangers with Michael Beale the right man to unlock his best potential at Ibrox.

The 24-year-old is closing in on a January transfer to the Light Blues, according to The 4th Official, having struggled to find his best form at Carrow Road for Norwich City.

Dorrans, who played with Cantwell in his earlier years before joining Rangers himself, doesn’t see him as being utilised in a deeper role despite Steven Davis’ injury setback.

“He’s got that great ability on the ball and I’m sure he could come up here and provide a spark for Rangers, definitely,” Dorrans said to the Daily Record. “It’s just about rediscovering that belief in himself he once had. He’s a confident player and just needs a bit of love.

“Listening to the way Michael Beale has spoken about him, I think he’s the man to help him get going again. If he can get back to his earlier levels then I’ve got no doubts that he can come and be successful, certainly from what I saw of him at Norwich.

“If I’m honest, I’m not sure I’d earmark him for one of the deeper midfield slots. He’s capable of playing there but it’s not where I think he will play if he comes up or even where I think his best position is.”

Reliable

Rangers are just lacking that game-changing number 10 to become a really good side across the park and Cantwell may well be the man who can fill that void.

The Light Blues had hoped that Tom Lawrence would be the answer to that particular question but the Welsh international has suffered with injuries throughout his time at Ibrox.

Beale hasn’t had the luxury of Lawrence being available yet and he may well end up as his first choice anyway but he can’t be relied upon to be fit to play as often as he should be.

Going out and signing a proven player like Cantwell is a genius move from Ross Wilson, especially given his age of just 24 meaning he could have plenty of time on his hands as well as sell-on value down the line if he does well.

It would be a statement first January signing and something Rangers really need to keep up with Celtic.

In other Rangers news, it was claimed on Monday (9 January) that a medical was imminent for the Light Blues to make their first winter transfer.
