Rangers will not loan out Rabbi Matondo during January transfer window

Rangers will not let Rabbi Matondo leave the club on loan in January despite his lack of game time under Michael Beale, say Football Scotland.

Matondo was signed from German outfit Schalke during the summer window as Giovanni van Bronckhorst looked to add pace to his side, but he suffered with injury problems and form.

Michael Beale has since come in and given the Wales international a small window to impress, but despite not making the match-day squad for the last two fixtures he will not be allowed to leave during the winter window.

“Rangers have no plans to send Rabbi Matondo on loan this month despite the winger not making the squad for the last two games,” they wrote (10 January).

Football Scotland understands the winger will stay put at Ibrox this transfer window despite clubs sniffing around the former Schalke attacker.”

Good decision

Rangers need to bring players in, not let players go, if we want to be competitive with Celtic for the remainder of the season.

Matondo hasn’t quite shown his true qualities since joining the club, but his skillset is certainly something that seems to suit what Beale wants to do at Ibrox.

Rangers

He’s quick, a great dribbler and carries a goal and assist threat, but with Fashion Sakala and Malik Tillman both in great form at the moment it’s no surprise that he isn’t seeing any minutes currently.

Not making the bench has been a bit of a surprise, and with the club seemingly interested in signing Todd Cantwell from Norwich that could further affect his playing time.

But strength in depth is something that Rangers have lacked hugely in recent times, so keeping him around and giving him opportunities to prove that he is the right man to compete for a spot in the squad seems like the right option.
