Official club partner share latest on Rangers pursuit of Antwerp defender William Pacho

Rangers are not interested in signing William Pacho from Antwerp in January despite reports from Belgium, according to Heart and Hand.

The Bears were linked with a “premium” move for the young defender, having scouted him on several occasions and were looking to push through a deal in January according to report from Het Nieuwsblad (4 January).

But after confirming that he is looking to bring in new players in January, and admitting to liking Todd Cantwell and Tom Davies, the club’s official partner confirmed that there is no move on the horizon for the South American.

“Rangers also not in for William Pacho of Antwerp despite reports in Belgium,” they wrote on their personal Twitter account (8 January).

No surprise

Pacho is said to be a highly rated young talent and there is always space for young talent at Ibrox, but this deal never seemed likely from the jump.

To begin with, central defence isn’t an area where we’re particularly in need right now. Connor Goldson, Ben Davies, John Souttar, James Sands and Leon King are all capable of playing there and have done at points this season.

Granted their fitness levels and performances haven’t been particularly reliable, but adding another young player who is learning and trying to adjust is probably the last thing we need.

King is ready to step in and improve whenever necessary, so bringing in another young player to block his path wouldn’t have been smart, especially with the way Michael Beale has spoken about wanting to use the young players at the club.

It came out of the blue and it seems like it’s going to disappear just as quickly, because there is nothing in this transfer rumour.
