Tam McManus slams VAR officials during Rangers v Dundee United amid new VAR controversy
Rangers were once again lucky not to concede a penalty for a handball by Connor Goldson, with Tam McManus suggesting he was exempt from VAR calls.
Goldson was lucky to get away with a handball decision in the Old Firm derby (2 January) according to many when he raised his arms and made contact with the ball, but it wasn’t given, with the rules later confirmed to have been correctly implemented.
But there was another handball incident in the first half of the Bears’ win over Dundee United involving the defender which once again was looked at but not given, and McManus made a quick-witted remark on Twitter about the call.
“VAR not apply to Goldson?” he asked on his personal account (8 January).
“Volleyball spike into the Dundee United net shortly,” he wrote, followed up with an eyes emoji and a laughing face emoji.
Behave
Obviously this is partially a joke, but to suggest it was ever a penalty to begin with is baffling by McManus.
His arm is down by his side and he’s battling to defend a corner, there’s no way on Earth it could ever be given as a penalty or a handball at all.

There’s no action towards the ball, zero intent to make himself bigger, and if that had been given for Rangers people would be screaming that we don’t want to see VAR giving penalties for small things like that.
They’d be right too, because it’s never a penalty and never a handball, so thankfully all the officials made the right decision and we’ll forget all about this one quickly if we haven’t already.
Goldson turned in a great performance defensively once again, proving just how much he was missed at Ibrox during his time out injured and proving once again how important he is to this team.
