Chris Sutton accuses Ally McCoist of defending total incompetence over Celtic conspiracy rant after Rangers draw
Ally McCoist is defending “total incompetence” with this rant against Celtic conspiracy theories after the draw with Rangers, says Chris Sutton.
The two pundits were on Scottish Football Extra for BT Sport when the Ibrox hero launched into an rousing routine on Hoops cries of foul over the lack of a penalty award at Ibrox on 2 January, sarcastically suggesting everyone is against Ange Postecoglou’s side.
Connor Goldson wasn’t penalised for a supposed handball in the game which ended 2-2, with new Celtic signing Alistair Johnston the most recent to express his disagreement with the decision, and in turn land himself in McCoist’s firing line.
Writing on his personal Twitter account in reaction to a clip of McCoist’s rant Sutton said: “Amazing how they all defend total incompetence and look for explanations to suit their argument, when it’s as basic as they come …Ally’s lost it here.”
‘Great banter, it really is’
This is really what being a football fan is all about, especially one involved in one the most well-known rivalries in the world.
Sutton enjoyed McCoist’s rant yet doesn’t agree with any of it, since it’s an argument that will divide Rangers and Celtic fans pretty much exactly down the middle.
Given that the rules have been cited as to why the incident didn’t result in a penalty, or a consultation with the pitch-side monitor from John Beaton, it is hardly “total incompetence” even if it you don’t believe the decision was correct.

It may be the way the VAR system is set out is illogical, and given the tidal wave of criticism across world football since it was introduced that certainly seems to be the case, but the officials are bound to follow those guidelines.
Willie Collum, the video assistant on the day, has been at the centre of controversial decisions that negatively affected the Light Blues in recent months himself, so perhaps this is the fabled ‘evening out’ of decisions that is so often pointed to.
Either way the Hoops got away with a point when Michael Beale’s side should have put the game away, and it likely preserved their lead at the top of the table to the end of the season barring a major turnaround.
In other Rangers news, the manager of a Gers January target has weighed in on a potential move during the window.
