Rangers: Tam Cowan shares what senior source told him about Celtic penalty controversy

Tam Cowan has shared what a senior source in the refereeing fraternity has told him about the Rangers Old Firm penalty controversy v Celtic on January 2.

Connor Goldson is the player in question and the man who has got Celtic fans all riled up on social media over a potential handball.

Cowan confessed that his “very senior source” believes that it wasn’t a penalty and nor would it be in any other top league around the world.

“Exclusive: Spoke to a very senior source in refereeing fraternity tonight – a well-respected, high-ranking match official – and this was his take on that ‘penalty’,” screamed Cowan on Instagram.

With VAR fully in play for the fixture, it’s hard to argue against the call made by the referee on the day and this one seems like Celtic fans playing up a bit.

Whingers.

What a bunch of whingers, it’s a slightly contentious decision but referees have given penalties for far less than what Goldson did in the Old Firm.

He hardly looked out of a natural position and clearly attempted to keep his arms tucked in, isn’t this what defenders have been coached to do in that very situation?

Like the senior refereeing source highlighted, what else are you meant to do with a ball flying 60mph at you, it’s virtually impossible to do anything but what Goldson did.

At the end of the day, the fixture was a solid one and the three points could have easily gone to either side, maybe the Gers even edged it with that solid second-half showing.

There are always going to be different opinions on what handball looks like in the modern game and it seems like this time the refereeing gods chose in the Gers’ favour.
