Kris Boyd blasts Alfredo Morelos for first half performance in Rangers 2-2 draw v Celtic live on Sky Sports

Kris Boyd has blasted Alfredo Morelos for his first-half performance in Rangers draw v Celtic, and called for more from Ryan Kent too.

The Gers fell behind after just four minutes during the Old Firm derby, before battling back to take the lead before eventually succumbing to late pressure as the points were shared in a 2-2 draw.

But after a poor first half showing, Boyd called out striker Morelos live on Sky Sports [2 January, 13:25] during the half-time break and said he looked “well off it,” while criticising captain James Tavernier’s role in the Celtic goal and Kent’s goal return.

“James Tavernier has got to do better,” he said.

“Morelos is bad enough, but Tavernier has got to do better from there. Goldson comes across, I don’t think he can do anything, but then you’ve got to say that Rangers have created chances without really threatening.

“For me, Morelos is well off it. In terms about losing the ball, yes he presses this but it’s down to Joe Hart being slack. That just shows you how quickly things can change.

“Morelos does really well in terms of trying to get it down there. Ryan Kent, if there has ever been a time to chop back it’s probably there if you’re not going to put it in the back of the net.

“But I’m not surprised, Ryan Kent his numbers for me, we touched on it at the top of the show, this is a big game for him because his numbers are nowhere near the level they should be. You’ve got to be scoring that.”

Harsh

The first half performance from Morelos wasn’t good enough, and he’d be the first to admit it, but the first half from everyone was pretty poor.

Singling him out wasn’t really fair, despite his struggles, and he improved greatly in the second half as did the rest of the team, including Kent.

Kent’s goal was sensational and showed exactly what he is capable of when he is direct and on form, and it’s exactly the reason why Boyd has been critical of him this season for not performing like that often enough.

Overall a draw was probably a fair result, with both teams capitalising when they were on top and showing their struggles when under pressure.

It shows that Rangers are more than good enough to compete with this Celtic team even when we’re not at our best, and that can only be a positive as we begin the new year.
