Rangers transfer news shows Ross Wilson has clear mission at Ibrox

Rangers have got plenty of positions that they need to strengthen during the January transfer window, but it’s clear Ross Wilson has a mission.

Central midfield is a position that is seen as weak among many at the club, while the entirety of the defence has been struck badly by injuries this season too.

Then there’s the attacking third of the pitch where new signings not named Antonio Colak have struggled and Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos’ future remains up in the air as they enter the final six months of their Ibrox contracts.

But over the past 48 hours it seems as though there is a clear priority position for both Michael Beale and Wilson to target, and that’s goalkeeper.

One report from talkSPORT on Thursday (29 December) claimed that the club are keen on signing current Everton shot-stopper Asmir Begovic on a free transfer when his current deal at Goodison Park expires in the summer.

There is also a report from the Daily Mail (29 December) that Manchester City youngster James Trafford is a target for the club, having impressed while out on loan at Bolton so far this season.

That right there could easily be your new number one and two goalkeepers at Ibrox for the 2023/24 season.

Allan McGregor will surely hang up his gloves this summer having been convinced to carry on for another year last season by Giovanni van Bronckhorst, only to lose his place in the side initially under the Dutch boss.

Then there is Jon McLaughlin, who started the season as number one but quickly lost his place after proving himself to be not good enough to be the main man between the sticks at the highest level.

Thankfully though it seems Beale has acknowledged this early on into his tenure at the club and Wilson is now on a mission to ensure the right replacements are brought in.

Whether it’s for January, which would surely be preferable, or the summer and the club is just working in advance, it’s now clear that a new goalkeeper is somewhat of a priority.

Expect to see many more links to other goalkeepers between now and the summer transfer window, and it could be any number of players who get the nod to become the new man in goal to help leads us to victory.
