Rangers want to sign Australia star Keanu Baccus, St Mirren ready to sell

Rangers are tracking St Mirren’s “star player” Keanu Baccus as Michael Beale looks to get his January business underway, according to The Scottish Sun.

It’s understood Ibrox scouts are whittling down their January options for the new boss and the 24-year-old Australian international has been identified as a target (Sun Sport, 29 December).

Keanu impressed for his country in Qatar and it’s understood St Mirren won’t stand in his way with the Gers and a number of English clubs interested in the midfielder.

He’s contracted to the Buddies until the summer of 2024 and was watched by the Gers in their 1-1 draw with Livingston on Wednesday (28 December).

New era

It’s no surprise to see the Gers already linked with younger, up-and-coming players from the Scottish Premiership now Beale has taken the reins at Ibrox. The former QPR boss was eager to give younger players an opportunity during his time in West London, and that won’t change at Ibrox.

With Steven Davis likely to have played his last game for the club another midfielder coming into the club is probably high on the list of priorities for the Gers’ boss. Scott Arfield and Ryan Jack are also heading into the latter stages of their careers and could do with some younger competition.

Baccus has international experience and is certainly due a chance to play at a higher calibre of club, whether that be in Scotland or south of the border in England.

The Ibrox faithful will be hoping this is the start of a busy period of transfer activity as Beale undertakes his first window in charge of the club.

In other Rangers news, a £5million twist has emerged in Southampton’s bid to sign Ryan Kent.
