Journalist responds to Bolton fan as Rangers linked with James Trafford transfer

Transfer links between Rangers and England Under-21 goalkeeper James Trafford could be a little premature, suggests Alan Nixon, who believes Michael Beale’s side are currently just assessing the shotstopper.

The Manchester City star has reportedly caught the eye of Rangers, who have been tracking the youngster’s progress and are keen on signing him during next month’s transfer window. [Daily Mail]

Trafford has conceded just 19 goals in his 22 league appearances while on loan for League One side Bolton this season, keeping an impressive ten clean sheets.

Replying to a Bolton fan who questioned whether there was any truth behind the transfer links on Twitter, journalist Nixon was quick to play down such rumours.

He said: “Think Rangers were just taking in a game.”

Successor

Although Beale has denied he wants to go shopping for a goalkeeper in January, the club will be planning for the succession of Allan McGregor at Ibrox.

With McGregor now in the twilight of his career at 40 year old and reserve keeper Jon McLaughlin just five years his junior, Rangers will look to bring some new blood into their goalkeeping ranks – and Trafford seems the perfect fit.

Trafford has quietly been going about his business in the football league, having spent the first half of last term with Accrington Stanley before heading to Bolton.

The 20-year-old has worked his way through the age groups at international level and made his Under-21 debut for England against Kosovo in June – in which he kept a clean sheet.

A move for Trafford either in January or the summer would hint that Beale and Ross Wilson are planning for the long-term future of the club.
