Steven Davis tipped to be future Rangers manager with new deal mooted despite injury setback – pundit

We’re delighted to welcome Tam McManus as our exclusive Rangers columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox

Rangers should offer a new contract to Steven Davis with the injured midfielder’s current deal expiring in the summer, according to Tam McManus.

Davis, 37, is set to miss the rest of the season through injury but unless he gets a new contract, that means that his short appearance as a substitute against Hibernian on 15 December will be his last for the Gers.

However, McManus has suggested that the Light Blues should get Davis tied down to a new contract as a gesture of goodwill and ensure his boots don’t get hung up on a bad note like this.

McManus also believes that Davis could potentially be a Rangers manager in the future so he needs to be looked after by the Glasgow club.

“I think Rangers will give him another deal, they’ll look after him,” McManus told Ibrox News.

“You’ve sometimes go to do that with loyal players.

Davis is one you’ve got to look after, not just for the next year or 18 months but the next two or three years down the line where they could get him into coaching.

In the long-term, he could be a future Rangers manager so I think they need to look after him and give him a new deal.”

McManus’ views on Davis are echoed by current Rangers manager Michael Beale.

As quoted by the Daily Record on 27 December, Beale said that he’s open to giving Davis a coaching role at Ibrox and also suggested the Northern Irishman could one day succeed him in the dugout.
