Kevin Thomson gushes over ‘sensational’ Malik Tillman moment in Rangers SPFL win v Motherwell

Kevin Thomson was left in awe by a “brilliant” backheeled pass from Malik Tillman as Rangers cruised to a 3-0 win over Motherwell at Ibrox.

The 20-year-old produced the moment of first-half skill to set up a chance for Alfredo Morelos who fired straight at Liam Kelly in the Motherwell net.

BT Sport pundit Thomson was impressed with the vision and weight of the pass from the American, who shined during the Scottish Premiership clash.

“It’s sensational that touch and he will expect to score. It’s a good ball from John Lundstram on the left-hand side and as you say, Tom [Miller], it’s brilliant vision and wonderful weight of pass from Tillman,” said Thomson (20:30, 28 December, Rangers TV).

Time to deliver

Tillman has shown he is far too good for most players in the Scottish Premiership, particularly when he’s playing at Ibrox against lesser opponents. The challenge for the American now is to deliver when Celtic make the trip to Ibrox on 2 January. His ability to pick a pass, drive at defenders, and finish when given the chance.

Rangers will need the American to be at his very best against Ange Postecoglou’s side, who are coming off of an impressive 4-0 away victory against Hibernian. It’s up to Rangers to take the came to their Old Firm rivals and for Michael Beale’s marquee players to really show they’re capable of mounting a title challenge in the 2022/23 season.

Alfredo Morelos also looked much improved and linked up well with Tillman. The Colombian’s presence allowed for the American to drift into pockets of space and make runs in behind, with caused Motherwell no end of problems.

It wasn’t a vintage performance, but it’s three points and it maintains Beale’s 100 per cent start since returning to the club.

It feels as if the first real test of Beale’s Rangers is now firmly in sight.

In other Rangers news, the club are now fancying their chances of major a January transfer after Fabrizio Romano’s update with a move on the cards.
