Kevin Thomson gobsmacked by Borna Barisic moment in Rangers v Motherwell

Kevin Thomson was left gushing over Rangers left-back Borna Barisic after his pinpoint cross helped Michael Beale’s side take the lead against Motherwell on Wednesday evening (28 December).

Arriving on the back of three straight wins, the Gers started brightly against the Steelmen, and it took just 13 minutes to break the deadlock.

Receiving the ball from Alex Lowry on the left wing, the Croatian defender whipped in a peach of a cross which Alfredo Morelos duly headed home from six yards out.

Speaking live on commentary for Rangers TV (28 December), former Rangers midfielder Thomson was left waxing lyrical over the perfect build up play by the home side.

He said: “Wow. What a ball. Take a bow Borna Barisic, what a ball!

“I’m not sure you’ll see a better cross anywhere for any fixture this week. Top top draw.”

Perfection

This was just the start Beale would have been after, with Celtic playing simultaneously against Hibernian.

Although Adam Devine played superbly against Ross County in Barisics’ absence, having a left-footer on that flank really does make the difference. Coming onto the ball first-time, the Croatian didn’t even hesitate about whipping a cross in for Morelos to meet.

The 30-year-old’s ball just wouldn’t have been possible for Devine to play, and this attacking output proved crucial in settling any nerves for the Gers in the early stages of the encounter.

For Morelos, the goal will do his confidence a world of good. It was the kind of ball strikers go to bed dreaming of, and if he’d spurned the chance, more calls for his head might have arisen from the Ibrox faithful.

After featuring for Croatia at the World Cup in Qatar and subsequently missing out on Rangers’ return to Scottish Premiership action, Barisic couldn’t have hoped for a better restart to life at Ibrox.
