Rangers need two new transfers for serious rebuild as noises come out of Ibrox

Michael Beale will require “at least two new players” to replenish his Rangers squad, but the noises coming out of Ibrox suggest a summer rebuild is more likely than a winter splash in the transfer market, according to the Scotsman.

The 42-year-old has overseen a seamless transition following the sacking of Giovanni van Bronckhorst at the Glasgow club, winning all three of his Scottish Premiership matches since arriving.

Despite the perfect statistical start, his Gers side failed the eye test at times during their consecutive 3-2 wins over Hibernian and Aberdeen. As a result, fans and pundits have called for Ross Wilson to strategise a restructure of the squad in the January transfer window.

According to the Scotsman, the club recognise they need fresh faces in offensive departments but will make their major moves at the end of the season.

The report said: “At least two new players are required across midfield and attack in January to revitalise this team, but the noises coming out of Ibrox indicate that summer, rather than winter, is when the serious rebuild will take place.

“Perhaps the injury to Davis will force the club’s hand, but with a large wage bill and a slightly bloated squad, there is a hope that they can soldier on with what they have at their disposal rather than making sweeping changes.”

Disappointing

Does a lack of spending in the January transfer window signal a lack of intent or even a concession of any Scottish Premiership title charge?

It certainly feels like a brilliant way to dampen the flood of positivity which has swept through Ibrox in the last month, with Beale hosting Motherwell (Wednesday 28 December) before taking on league-leaders Celtic in the New Year.

With the Gers still sitting nine points off the top of the table, they must continue their relentless form if they are to stand any chance of reeling in their close rivals, but this transfer update doesn’t bode well for their chances.

Yes, it is notoriously hard to make season-defining signings in the winter window, but fans would surely have hoped that Rangers would give it a good crack.

With Alfredo Morelos nearing the end of his contract in attack and Beale’s midfield looking a little short on quality, some major restructuring of the squad is likely needed to meet the new manager’s demands.
