Rangers transfer news as new goalkeeper needed to replace Allan McGregor in 2023

Rangers need to replace goalkeeper Allan McGregor in 2023 and make an upgrade between the sticks, according to Daily Record journalist David McCarthy.

Jon McLaughlin and Robby McCrorie sit behind McGregor in the Rangers goalkeeping pecking order but it’s thought by many that changes in the position are needed.

McCarthy admitted that despite McGregor being a “solid” option for Rangers in net, the club need more than solid if they are to progress any further.

“McGregor is the best he’s got and he’s still very good but this will surely be his last season,” said McCarthy as quoted by the Daily Record.

“Jon McLaughlin and Robby McCrorie are solid goalkeepers but Rangers need better than ‘solid’ so I’d expect a new No 1 next term.”

Time to move on.

McGregor has consistently demonstrated his quality as a goalkeeper, making a number of important saves and contributing to many of Rangers’ victories over the years.

He has also won numerous individual awards and accolades, including being named the Scottish Premier League Goalkeeper of the Year on three occasions.

Nevertheless, now is the time for the veteran goalkeeper to move on and with his contract coming to an end this summer, there simply isn’t a better time to replace him.

And McCarthy is right, Rangers need someone who is better than solid in between the sticks, a goalkeeper who can stay at Ibrox for a very long time.

Finding such a stopper is tricky, but there are definitely options on the market, options that are better in quality than what the Gers currently have in their ranks.

McGregor will be just one of numerous faces leaving Ibrox this summer, a massive squad overhaul is needed and Beale needs to make his imprint on the team.

In other Rangers news, the club are now fancying their chances of major a January transfer after Fabrizio Romano’s update with a move on the cards.
