BBC pundit stunned by John Lundstram in Rangers win v Ross County

John Robertson was left astonished by Rangers midfielder John Lundstram and his “terrific” strike for the opening goal against Ross County in the Scottish Premiership.

Michael Beale’s side started brightly against the Staggies on Friday night (23 December) without carving open any clear-cut opportunities, but the 28-year-old took matters into his own hands on the 35-minute mark.

After receiving a pass from Fashion Sakala on the right wing, Lundstram took one touch to steady himself before unleashing a thunderous left-footed strike into the bottom corner of the Ross County net.

BBC Sportsound pundit Robertson waxed lyrical about the opening goal of the night.

He said: “It’s a terrific strike and well worked from Rangers. They showed patience, they managed to stretch the County defence a bit, Lundstram struck it well and it’s whistled past Laidlaw.”

Brilliant strike

For large portions of the opening 45 minutes, Beale’s side struggled to unlock a stubborn Ross County defence. Without Alfredo Morelos as a figurehead of the attack, there were plenty of promising flicks and passing combinations but no clear-cut chances.

The opener, therefore, had to come from something special, and Lundstram’s strike was certainly that. The technique the midfielder showed in striking the ball was phenomenal, but Ross County will be disappointed as he was left unmarked and in acres of space on the edge of the box.

The ex-Sheffield United man was brilliant in all aspects of his game in the early stages, dropping into a defensive back three when out of possession but pushing forward when the Gers were in attack.

Having been recalled to the starting XI for Ryan Jack, Lundstram knew he had to impress the new manager to maintain the spot in the middle of the park. Beale will now face a tough selection dilemma over the New Year, as the Englishman was hugely impressive throughout.

In other Rangers news, the club are now fancying their chances of a major January transfer after Fabrizio Romano’s update with a move on the cards.
