Glen Kamara would surely fail medical if Rangers exit happened in January after surgery news

Michael Beale’s announcement that Rangers midfielder Glen Kamara has been delaying surgery over the last few months surely comes as a huge blow to any potential suitors in the January transfer window.

The 42-year-old praised the Finnish midfielder during his press conference on Thursday (22 December), stating his commitment to the team was evident after playing through the pain barrier for large portions of the season.

Beale said on the matter: “Kamara probably should have had an operation the last few months but has been playing through.”

After falling out of favour under predecessor Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Kamara has started both Scottish Premiership matches under his new English manager and is likely to feature against Ross County on Friday (23 December).

The Gers ace, however, is reportedly a target for as many as ten teams in Ligue 1 in the upcoming winter window, but this injury news has created a serious roadblock to a January exit.

What the injury is, or the extent of it has not yet been revealed, but the murmurs of surgery don’t bode well for the 27-year-old. If Kamara were to explore a potential exit in the New Year, he would surely struggle to pass any necessary medical tests attached to the transfer.

With an injury of that nature, clubs will be wary of coughing up a decent transfer fee for a player who could be carrying a substantial injury. Typically January transfers are made with the purpose of making an immediate effect and helping improve a team during the second half of the season.

But can Kamara do this while carrying this niggle? Or would he be sat on the sidelines after making the transfer?

For Rangers, a change of plans might now need to be on the cards. Beforehand, the Scottish club would have been considering the sale of their prized asset – and with so many clubs interested in his signature, a price and terms shouldn’t have been hard to negotiate.

Now it is likely that the Finnish midfielder will almost certainly be staying at Ibrox for the remainder of the season.
