Kris Boyd wants Alfredo Morelos axed from Rangers lineup despite 3-2 win v Aberdeen

Kris Boyd wants Alfredo Morelos to be axed from the Rangers starting lineup despite the 3-2 win over Aberdeen on Tuesday night (20 December).

The Gers came from 2-1 down to claim all three points at Easter Road thanks to two goals in injury time from substitute Scott Arfield, reducing the gap at the top of the table to six points ahead of Celtic’s clash with Livingston on Wednesday night (21 December).

But after being handed another start by new boss Michael Beale, Boyd admitted that he wasn’t happy with the performances of Morelos up front and suggested he should be dropped to allow Arfield to take his place as the number nine in Friday’s game with Ross County.

“Rangers never seem to be in control of a game of football,” he told Sky Sports (20 December).

“He’s not daft, Michael Beale. He knows there’s a lot of work, he’s said it, we’ve touched on it.

“They’re waiting for individuals to do something – that spark. And you look at the top end of this pitch right now, and I don’t want to go on about it because I’m sick to the back teeth of talking about him, he needs to do more, Morelos, there’s no doubt about it.

“I’m looking at Friday night, and you’re thinking could Scott Arfield potentially take that role as a false nine?

“It’s got to be a lot better at the top of the pitch for Rangers.”

Not enough

Morelos has struggled this season for his best form after starting the campaign injured and behind top scorer Antonio Colak as the first-choice number nine.

Beale’s arrival at Ibrox is said to be a lifeline for the Colombian who has been a fan favourite ever since his arrival at the club, but with his contract set to expire in the summer there are plenty of question marks surrounding his future at the club.

Rangers

If he wants to stay and Beale wants him to be first-choice once again though, then he has to work far harder than he has been in recent weeks and do much better on the pitch to earn that spot.

As it stands Colak’s ability and form should see him reinstated as first-choice at the first possible opportunity because we already know what he offers, and Arfields’ performances off the bench in recent games means he has earned a start.

Beale has some big decisions to make in the coming games, because if he’s too loyal to his favourites it could end up costing the team points.
