Kris Boyd baffled by Anthony Stewart after what Aberdeen man did live on Sky Sports v Rangers

Kris Boyd was left baffled by Anthony Stewart after the Aberdeen defender failed to clear the ball in the lead-up to Fashion Sakala’s strike for Rangers in their win at Pittodrie.

Two late goals from Scott Arfield saw Michael Beale’s side pick up a memorable victory to keep their Scottish Premiership hopes alive.

Boyd was less than impressed with the home side’s defending for the Gers’ opener as Beale’s side made a fast start against Jim Goodwin’s men.

“I think from an Aberdeen point of view, Stewart should do a lot better,” said Boyd (Sky Sports Football, 20 December, 08:56pm).

“Ryan Jack feeds Alfredo Morelos there, it’s not the best there from Stewart but Fashion Sakala reacts well and is able to stab it past Kelle Roos in the goal.

“It’s a good finish, aim right for the goalkeeper. It’s really, really poor defending there from Anthony Stewart. I don’t know what he’s doing.”

Poor

It was really poor defending by the Aberdeen man in the lead-up to the goal, however, Alfredo Morelos’ involvement should not go without praise. The Colombian was instrumental in the Gers taking the lead after a neat piece of play down the right flank.

The second-half performance was reminiscent of what we have been used to in the 2022/23 season with the Gers completely lacking in ideas and one-dimensional going forward. Furthermore, Beale’s side were plagued by defensive errors with James Sands struggling at the heart of the defence.

Rangers

However, the Rangers boss has to take huge credit for making four changes in the second half which ultimately proved to be the difference. Scott Arfield’s introduction was inspired, with the veteran midfielder a threat throughout his impressive cameo.

This could be a huge result in terms of the Light Blues’ title ambitions. Had they failed to win, Celtic could have pulled well out of sight of Beale’s side.
