James Tavernier excluded from Rangers squad, drove to Aberdeen by himself for 3-2 win
James Tavernier was excluded from the Rangers squad and drove to Aberdeen on his own for the game on Tuesday night as he’s battling with the flu.
The skipper started in his usual right-back spot and played relatively well as the team came from 2-1 down to win 3-2 with two injury time goals from substitute Scott Arfield.
But according to the club’s official partner “Four Lads Had A Dream” podcast, they claim that Tavernier was separated from the rest of his teammates for the entire day in the build-up to the game due to illness but is determined to play through it as the team is so short on options currently.
“Bit of context to last night,” they wrote on their official Twitter account (21 December).
“James Tavernier is loaded with Flu, hasn’t trained much & is unwell. Drove up to the game and back by himself, got changed away from squad etc. Didn’t eat or stay with team. Determined to play through for club as so short on options.”
Legend
There is a reason that fans and everyone associated to Rangers Football Club absolutely loves Tavernier and that’s because he always puts the team before himself.
This is just another example of that, as most people at this time of year would rather miss the game and fully recover surrounded by their family and prepare for the next game on Friday night instead.

However Tavernier made the trip himself, didn’t eat with the team, didn’t stay with the team, didn’t change with the team and still managed to get through a huge performance for the full 97 minutes to help drag his team to a hugely important three points.
Rangers now find themselves pushing Celtic in the title race and with the Old Firm derby coming up in a little over a week, the hope is that he is able to recover or the team can get some players back to strengthen the options we have.
