Andy Walker blasts ‘stupid’ Scott Wright after incident in Rangers win v Aberdeen at Pittodrie

Andy Walker brandished Scott Wright as “stupid” after the Rangers attacker needlessly fouled Jonny Hayes late on in the 3-2 win away at Aberdeen on Tuesday night.

Hayes, 35, had the ball in the corner as Aberdeen tried to hang onto their points against Rangers and even though the ex-Celtic winger was going nowhere, 25-year-old Wright came over and shoved him to the ground.

Wright somehow avoided a yellow card for the incident, which Willie Collum simply awarded Aberdeen a free-kick.

Hayes’ bid to run down the clock eventually didn’t work as the Gers came from 2-1 down to win 3-2 in stoppage time thanks to a dramatic Scott Arfield brace.

But ex-Celtic striker Walker was raging about Wright’s foul on Hayes when it happened.

“I tell you what, that’s one for the stupid category,” said Walker on Sky Sports Football on Tuesday night [20 December, 09:43pm].

“He’s going nowhere.”

Desperate

You cannot really blame Wright.

Hayes was doing what he could to kill the clock and help Aberdeen win three points against the Gers.

If Wright didn’t come over and foul him, vital time would have been wasted that could have stopped Arfield from grabbing the two goals needed to win the game in stoppage time.

Wright didn’t get booked, he just gave away a foul.

It was pretty much the former Aberdeen attacker’s only contribution on his return to Pittodrie.

Let’s face it, Wright is a level below what’s needed at Ibrox and it’s time the club starts to shift on players like him and looking for upgrades.

Wright is a decent player for a Scottish Premiership side that isn’t the Old Firm so maybe there’ll be takers for the former Scotland Under-21 international at some point next year.

In 70 total appearances for the Gers, Wright has scored just eight goals and only supplied six assists.

And in his 20 outings this season, he’s not scored and set up just one goal, which was against Ross County back in August.

In other Rangers news, James Tavernier was spotted by Kris Boyd distracting a teammate ahead of what happened at Pittodrie.
