Spotted: James Tavernier says something to Rangers teammate moments before clanger v Aberdeen – Sky Sports pundit

Kris Boyd noticed James Tavernier say something to Allan McGregor after the Rangers goalkeeper made a mistake that led to Luis ‘Duk’ Lopes scoring against them on Tuesday night.

Duk, 22, levelled for Aberdeen on the stroke of half-time with a free-kick that easily beat McGregor because the 40-year-old veteran took a step the wrong way beforehand that left him nowhere near the ball as it flew past him into the net.

At half-time, Boyd mentioned that he noticed Tavernier, 31, speaking to McGregor moments before Duk took the free-kick, suggesting that could have been an issue leading to the goal.

“I was looking at it before. Right before at the start, James Tavernier turns around and says something [to McGregor],” said Boyd on Sky Sports Football on Tuesday night [20 December, 08:55pm].

“I don’t know if it’s maybe lost in translation or something but Allan then takes a step to his left for some reason. But take nothing away from Duk. It’s a fantastic strike.”

Ibrox News has highlighted what Boyd noticed below.

Anything in it?

Whether or not it was something that Tavernier said to McGregor that caused the veteran goalkeeper to start going the wrong way, we won’t know for sure.

But either way, even just speaking to the shot-stopper moments before Duk struck the ball could’ve been distracting and broke McGregor’s concentration.

It’s not Tavernier’s fault, really.

He’s the club’s captain and is allowed to communicate throughout the team. It’s either bad luck or bad goalkeeping.

But the main issue with this goal and what people aren’t talking about enough is how stupid James Sands was to concede the free-kick on the edge of the box.

He was rightly booked but it would have done us all a favour if he was sent off because he was then at fault for Aberdeen’s second goal of the match in the second half.

Sands isn’t good enough.

He has too many games where he’s a complete liability.
