BBC Scotland journalist Tom English questions Rangers v Hibernian

BBC Scotland journalist Tom English questioned Rangers and Michael Beale’s approach after what he saw in the clash against Hibernian on 15 December.

The game was Michael Beale’s first Scottish Premiership clash in charge at Ibrox and despite enjoying large amounts of possession, there was still a lack of clinical nature at times in the 3-2 win.

English confessed that Rangers still displayed a “huff and puff” approach to the game despite showing an increased tempo compared to Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s tenure.

“I can see Rangers are trying to increase the tempo compared to the van Bronckhorst period but there’s still a lot of huff and puff,” said English, speaking live on BBC Radio coverage.

English’s words speak a lot of truth, for all the possession Rangers had they lacked poaching prowess at times and Antonio Colak’s absence was plain to see.

Colak key?

Beale alluded to the fact he will look to start two forwards for Rangers in the coming months and with Morelos grabbing Rangers’ third goal against Hibernian, a partnership with Colak could be his ticket to stay at Ibrox.

Sadly, we were unable to see the partnership in question on 15 December, after Colak went completely missing from the matchday squad, due to a calf injury. [Scottish Sun]

It’s still unclear how long Colak will be on the sidelines, but the Croatian was obviously a key cog in Beale’s plans, which likely threw his first-team selection into a bit of disarray.

Colak is the club’s top scorer this season, netting 14 goals in 24 appearances and could form a formidable partnership with Columbian Morelos.

Thankfully, Morelos finally stepped up with the winner and that should hopefully give him the confidence to move forward and progress under Beale rather than being left behind by Colak.

In other Rangers news, an out-of-court agreement could be reached for the Gers as documents have been submitted.
