Rangers signing Ryan Porteous a ‘no-brainer’ despite ‘stupid’ antics – Kenny Miller

Kenny Miller wants to see Rangers make a big move to sign Hibernian defender Ryan Porteous in the January transfer window.

The Scottish international has made it clear that his Easter Road era is coming to an end with his contract up at the end of the season and the Light Blues are keen to take him to Ibrox.

Miller believes this move would be a no-brainer for the chiefs at Auchenhowie but the 25-year-old would have to mature to make the move work.

Rangers

“Rangers signing Ryan Porteous from Hibs on a free transfer should be a no-brainer,” Miller said in his Daily Record column. “If it’s purely a football decision, it’s not a bad idea at all.

“But for him to make it in Glasgow and realise his full potential at Ibrox he’ll need to cut out some of the stupid antics he’s shown at Easter Road. Listen, the boy can play. But he’s also got a reputation for being a bit of [swear] on the pitch.

“I suppose what that shows is that he’s got character and a personality. And when you play for big clubs, you need to have a bit about you.”

Problems

Rangers are only searching for a new centre-half because they have a handful of injuries in that one position and those will soon be sorted out as the season goes on.

Connor Goldson is nearing a return after months out following his Champions League and Ben Davies has shaken off the knocks he was suffering to further bolster Michael Beale’s final line of defence.

Rangers

Leon King and James Sands offer suitable backup and that is without John Souttar and Filip Helander who are also set to return from injury not long after the restart.

Adding yet another central defender to the mix might only serve to cause Beale problems he does not need right now and with Porteous being a controversial man himself, it might be worth avoiding this deal.

It can be revisited in the summer if Porteous does not find a route out of Easter Road in January when Beale has a proper gauge on who he wants and doesn’t want at Ibrox.
