Kenny Miller shares conversation with Ryan Porteous as Rangers linked with controversial transfer

Kenny Miller has shared a conversation he held with Rangers transfer target Ryan Porteous when the Hibernian defender was coming through the ranks at Easter Road.

Clyde manager Jim Duffy suggested (Clyde Superscoreboard, 31:51, 5 December) that Porteous was of interest to the Gers, with the defender turning down a new contract at Easter Road.

Miller has since revealed how Porteous sought him out after a game to ask the striker how he should deal with specific movements and runs from forwards.

“I like him as a player. I actually played against him when he was a young boy coming through at Easter Road,” said Miller (Sunday Mail, 11 Dec, page 65).

“And I remember after a game, he sought me out and started asking me for advice. He was asking me how he should deal with specific types of runs and movements from strikers.

“That was a completely different boy to the one you see at times for Hibs now. He had just come into the team and was hungry to learn. He wanted to get better and develop himself. I think he actually showed some balls to come and get me and ask questions.

“But he also showed maturity by wanting to improve himself. I don’t mind a centre-back trying to noise up strikers, like Ryan does.”

Unlikely

There looks like there’s interest from Rangers, but at the moment it’s hard to gauge just how serious their pursuit of Porteous is. Duffy’s remark on the Gers’ interest is about all we can go off at the moment, and another central defender is potentially not too high up on Michael Beale’s agenda.

He would certainly be a controversial signing having been involved in a number of high-profile incidents against Rangers over the last few years. However, considering he would be a free addition, it wouldn’t be the worst business in the world for the club to pursue.

There’s plenty of interest from south of the border in the defender and it wouldn’t be a shock to see him end up at a Championship club as he looks to progress his career further.

Beale faces a huge month in January, with Rangers needing to refresh and rebuild their squad and where Porteous ends up could be one of the sagas of the winter window.

In other Rangers news, this prolific goalscorer is “excited” by speculation linking him with a move to Ibrox in January.
