Ally McCoist urges Rangers board to support to Michael Beale after ‘gamble’

Ally McCoist was surprised at Michael Beale’s Rangers appointment but believes it can work as long as he’s backed by the board.

Following Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s sacking, it didn’t take long for the Rangers board to identify Beale as his ideal replacement at Ibrox.

However, considering Beale’s lack of experience, McCoist was surprised that the board took a gamble on Steven Gerrard’s former assistant.

“Hiring any manager is a gamble. I was surprised that Rangers hired Michael as I thought they’d prefer someone with more experience but when you actually think about it, they’ve hired someone that knows the club, has been there and knows what’s required of him,” McCoist told Grosvenor Sport, as quoted by Glasgow Live.

But McCoist is confident that Beale can turn things around at Ibrox provided he’s supported fully by the Rangers board.

“The one thing he needs to get; is support from the board – it’s vital. The next two or three months are vital for Beale and his tenure. The board made the decision to hire Michael and one thing that needs to be done now is for us Rangers supporters to rally around the team and give them support.

“The time is now for Rangers to start winning things again, domestically. It’s important that Michael gets support from the board too and I’m sure he will. There are some exciting times ahead.”

Full unity

In the last few months, a gulf has started to grow between the Rangers fanbase and the board. The fractured relationship has not helped things on or off the pitch, and performances under Giovanni van Bronckhorst only made things worse.

With Beale now at the helm and excitement returning to Ibrox, it’s important that every pillar of the club works together. There’s a lot of faith in Beale to deliver success from both the board and fans.

If Gers are to close the gap to Celtic then the club will need everyone working in unison. The board need to shoulder the responsibility for the lack of success this season and work to repair the relationship with the fans.

Beale may lack experience but he enjoyed great success at QPR before rumours of his exit started to spread, and he also shared lots of happy memories with Gerrard during his time as a Rangers coach.

The second half of the current campaign is bound to be difficult as Beale adapts to the job and tries to keep Celtic within touching distance, but it’s essential that he gets everyone on his side ahead of a crucial season next year.
