Rangers want to sign San Jose Earthquakes midfielder Jan Gregus
Rangers are in a two-horse race to sign San Jose Earthquakes midfielder Jan Gregus in the January transfer window, according to La Gazzetta Express.
The 31-year-old is set to become a free agent on 31 December as his contract with the Major League Soccer side expires with no renewal on the horizon.
Gregus, a Slovakian international, played 27 times for the Earthquakes during the 2022 season where they finished rock-bottom of the Western Conference which was won by eventual champions Los Angeles FC.

He has previous experience playing in Europe having been a regular for FC Copenhagen before moving to Minnesota United in 2019. He also had a brief loan at Bolton Wanderers but did not play a game in the 2013-14 season.
Rangers are not the only side keen on Gregus, though, as French Ligue 1 side Stade Rennes are also on the lookout for a cheap January option who can patrol in front of the back four.
Wise
After so many expensive failures in the transfer market over the past few years, a freebie in January seems like a fairly risk-free move for Ross Wilson to make.
He will, of course, require Michael Beale giving the thumbs up to the move before he can proceed to negotiate with the 36-time Slovakian international but the sooner he can get the deal done, the better.

San Jose will not have any kind of sway on the matter once his contract expires but they can be awkward if they want and refuse him to talk to other clubs until the day comes.
It is unlikely they would do that, though, so assuming Wilson has his house in order, he had better get to the States and start negotiating a deal.
Gregus might not be a mainstay for years to come at Ibrox but right now, they need experience and solidity which he brings in bucketloads.
In other Rangers news, another midfielder linked to Glasgow is now unlikely to make the move as new reports emerge on Wednesday (7 December).
