Chris Jack blasts ‘bizarre’ COVID question aimed at Rangers board in AGM on Tuesday

The Herald’s Chris Jack believes shareholders missed an opportunity as Rangers held their Annual General Meeting on Tuesday morning.

The Ibrox board went under the spotlight (6 December) as shareholders were given the chance to hold the decision-makers at the club to account.

However, Jack was less than impressed with some of the questioning, with the journalist particularly disliking a “Covid-themed rant” from one shareholder.

“As is so often the case at these events, it was an opportunity missed in many ways,” wrote Jack in his latest column for The Herald (6 December).

“This was the largest gathering of shareholders for quite some time but those that ventured in from a cold, crisp Glasgow morning didn’t create a red-hot atmosphere as few seats were left unfilled.

“The questions that were valid were not concise enough to really hold the board to account, while others – the most bizarre of which was a Covid-themed rant that got the short-shrift and derision that it deserved – reflected the mood of the individual rather than the collective.”

Needed

The meeting on Tuesday morning was needed. The sacking of Giovanni van Bronckhorst and the subsequent appointment of Michael Beale, along with the AGM has come at a good time for the club. It’s almost a reset and refresh for everyone concerned with Rangers.

When it comes to the shareholders’ questioning, there will always be certain individuals who are hellbent on going on rants, instead of really digging into what is actually going on behind the scenes at the club.

However, at an event such as this, it’s never really going to be the same interrogation, compared to press conferences, where journalists who are up-to-date with the latest ongoings can really try and get to the crux of the matter.

Ross Wilson was a man under fire and that was to be expected, but due to Beale’s appointment, it could well be a fresh start for the sporting director as well.

For now, the board have earned themselves a little bit of leeway, but if things don’t improve when the Scottish Premiership kickstarts, tough questions will almost certainly emerge.

In other Rangers news, this prolific goalscorer is “excited” by speculation linking him with a move to Ibrox in January.
