Ross Stewart ‘excited’ by Rangers transfer talk as Sunderland exit lined up for January – pundit

We’re delighted to welcome Tam McManus as our exclusive Rangers columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…

Sunderland striker Ross County would be “excited” by the prospect of joining Rangers in January, according to Tam McManus.

Stewart, 26, has been linked with a move to Ibrox ahead of the winter transfer window with Football League World reporting on 28 November that Sunderland are ready to cash in on the two-time Scotland international.

Celtic are also said to be keen on Stewart, whose deal at the Stadium of Light is due to expire at the end of the season.

McManus feels as though the Black Cats goal machine would be a perfect addition for Michael Beale in the January transfer window but adds that the new Gers boss may need to sign another striker on top of him.

“I think he would cost them a few quid,” McManus told Ibrox News.

He’s done well at Sunderland, he’s playing well in the Championship, he’s a Scottish lad. He’s one who could be excited by a move to Rangers.

He’d be a very good signing. He’d bring something different and add some presence in the attack. He’s hungry. He’s done well at Sunderland.

There are going to be a lot of players linked with Rangers and that may be agent talk trying to get their players a move. Other ones, there could be something in it but we’ll just have to wait and see.

Rangers do need to go into the market for a striker though – possibly two.”

Stewart has been out of action since the start of September due to injury but in his seven Championship appearances prior to that blow, he managed to score five goals and supply three assists.

Last season, he propelled Sunderland from England’s League One with 26 goals in 53 appearances across all competitions, including one in a play-off final victory at Wembley against Wycombe.
