Rangers need to sell players for January transfer warchest with limited funds available

Rangers must sell players to be able to fund January transfers after Douglas Park gave Michael Beale assurances following his appointment.

The 42 year old was officially appointed on a three-and-a-half year deal on Monday (28 November), replacing Giovanni van Bronckhorst and becoming the 18th permanent manager in Rangers’ history.

It was previously reported that Beale wanted assurances about his budget and spending resources to strengthen the squad, and according to the Daily Record (28 November) he was given those by the Rangers chairman.

“Rangers chairman Douglas Park has vowed to support Beale going forward and there will be limited funds for the January window, unless cash is generated from player sales,” they wrote in a report.

Where has it gone?

It’s a bit mad that more sales need to happen for the club to be able to spend considering the club barely spent any of the money generated in 2022 so far.

Nathan Patterson kicked off the year with a £16m move to Everton in the January transfer window, and the Gers followed that up by selling Calvin Bassey to Ajax for over £20m and Joe Aribo to Southampton for around £10m too.

Van Bronckhorst was limited to mainly loans and free transfers in the most recent summer window, and still managed to qualify for the Champions League group stages, but then didn’t spend anything of that additional income.

So where has all that money gone?

Beale will need to weaken the squad before strengthening it, and it’s already weaker than it was when he left for Villa Park just over a year ago.

It’s not the ideal start, but we’re all backing Beale to turn it around and lead us to glory, whether we believe he was the right man for the job or not.
