Ally McCoist reacts live on talkSPORT as Rangers manager news breaks on Monday morning

Ally McCoist provided a live reaction to the news that Rangers had agreed to personal terms with Michael Beale on Monday morning.

Beale had been Rangers’ first-choice managerial target ever since the club sacked Giovanni van Bronckhorst last week, and it now seems the 42-year-old’s appointment at Ibrox is inevitable.

TalkSPORT revealed on Twitter on Monday morning that the QPR boss had agreed terms with Rangers, and Laura Woods and Ally McCoist were live on air to discuss the news.

“Thoughts this morning, on breaking news in fact – Michael Beale has agreed personal terms with Rangers and is set to be unveiled as their manager as early as today,” said Woods, live on talkSPORT.

“Rangers are paying £1.5million, that’s the release clause in his QPR contract, to bring Steven Gerrard’s former assistant back to Ibrox. Marks out of 10 about how excited you are about that appointment?” asked Woods.

“It’s not going to be a 10, it’s not going to be a one, it’s somewhere in between – it’s probably about a six,” answered McCoist.

“You threw that at me quick, I didn’t know where I was going with the answer.

“One hundred per cent I’ll give him my total support because it’s a job I want him to do well. I’m a little bit surprised I can’t lie to you – I’m a little bit surprised.”

Surprise

From the moment Van Bronckhorst was sacked, the vacancy seemed to be heading to either Beale or Sean Dyche. They were the only two managers that stood out in Rangers’ shortlist, and they certainly split opinion.

West London Sport reported that Ross Wilson was the senior figure at Gers pushing for Beale, with many others in the boardroom clearly eyeing up Dyche.

Based on McCoist’s initial reaction to the Beale news, it seems he too may have favoured Dyche over Steven Gerrard’s former assistant.

But it’s time for fans and pundits around Ibrox to stop viewing Beale as only Gerrard’s assistant and start considering him his own manager. He did superbly well at QPR before endless manager links derailed his side, and his record as a coach, assistant and full-time manager are all very impressive.

Beale also boasts a good knowledge of Scottish football and has already built a rapport with many players at the club. It seemed like an easy decision for the board to make, so there shouldn’t be too much surprise.
