Rangers make official approach to hire Michael Beale as new manager as talks underway
Rangers have finally made an official approach to hire Michael Beale as Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s replacement at Ibrox, according to John Percy.
Writing vis his personal Twitter account on Saturday afternoon (26 November), the Telegraph journalist reported that talks are already underway to bring the 42-year-old back to Govan just over a year after he left to join Aston Villa along with Steven Gerrard.
Percy claims that those discussions are “progressing” and as long as there’s not a last-ditch change of heart, Beale is in “pole position” to be the 18th permanent Rangers manager.
Good move?
We’re a bit torn on this one.
Beale only left a year ago so he’ll know most of the hierarchy and most of the players.
He was one of the key players behind Gerrard’s success at Ibrox while he also played a major role for the Englishman at Villa Park too.
It’s no coincidence that it went downhill for Gerrard after Beale left to be the QPR manager in the summer.
He’s started well at Loftus Road but he’s still a baby in terms of managerial experience and we’ve seen managers with far bigger and far more impressive CVs than the Bromley-born coach fail at Ibrox in the past.

At the end of the day, he cannot do much worse than van Bronckhorst did in the first half of this season because irreparable damage had already been done in Europe and the title race already looks to be over.
The most important thing to happen with Beale is for the board to back him financially and for Ross Wilson to pull his finger out and actually revitalise this ageing squad of players.
In other Rangers news, an approach has been made for a different manager.
